The Nicaragua córdoba is an officially announced national currency of Nicaragua with currency code NIO and symbol C$. It is subdivided into 100 centavos. The córdoba was introduced on 20th March 1912 by replacing the old currency the peso moneda corrient. Initially, its worth was nearly equal to the United States dollar.
The first series of Nicaragua córdoba coins were introduced in 1912 in denominations of ½, 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 centavos and 1 córdoba. In 1981, a whole new series was introduced presenting the portrayal of Augusto César Sandino in denominations of 5, 10, 25 and 50 centavos and 1, 5 córdobas. The third series of córdoba coins were issued in 1994 in denominations of 5, 10, 25 and 50 centavos.
The National Bank of Nicaragua introduced the first series of Nicaragua córdobas banknotes in 1912 in denominations of 10, 25, 50 centavos and 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 córdobas. In 1962, the Central Bank of Nicaragua took over the responsibility of issuing paper money. The second series was published in bank form in 1988 in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 córdobas, while note of 5000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 was added in 1989.
On 26th October 2015, the Central Bank of Nicaragua introduced a whole new family of córdoba banknotes in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 córdobas. In order to ease high-level financial transactions, the Central Bank of Nicaragua added banknote of 1000 on 1st December 2016.
